Local agent Abdul Latif Jameel Co (ALJ) has told the Ministry of Commerce and Industry it will begin its recall of two models of Toyota cars, the Avalon sedan and Sequoia sport utility vehicle, to make sure they were safe to drive, the newspaper said, citing a source at ALJ.
The source said the company will "begin a special maintenance campaign to install a small precision-cut steel reinforcement bar into the accelerator pedal assembly of 14,561 Avalon cars between January 2005 and January 2010 and 6,222 Sequoia models manufactured between November 2008 and January 2010".
Saudi Arabia's Consumer Protection Association (CPA) has for weeks been calling on authorities to force ALJ to recall and check in cars it sold locally.
The UAE last week ordered Toyota to recall thousands of vehicles. The Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (ESMA) instructed Toyota to recall 3,120 vehicles, despite assurances the accelerators would not experience the same problems due to the country’s hot climate.
The UAE recall also covers the 2005-2010 year Avalon sedans and 2009-2010 Sequoia sport utility vehicles, two of the eight models recalled worldwide.
Toyota has recalled of more than 8.5 million cars worldwide since late 2009 for three separate defects.
The car maker said Feb. 2 the Avalon and Sequoia vehicles sold in the Middle East had been shipped from the United States, where those models have been subject to the recall.
Toyota said in a statement distributed in the Middle East that the same problem afflicting cars in North America, Europe and China was unlikely to occur in the Middle East due to the difference in climate.
The source at ALJ told Arab News that “although the two models suffered accidents very rarely in Saudi Arabia, the company launched the service campaign to ensure the safety of car owners”.
The Gulf Arab region accounted for 6.5 percent of Toyota's global car sales, Jim Sakaguchi, Toyota's marketing general manager for the Middle East and southwest Asia, told al-Eqtisadiah newspaper in an interview last year.
